This is a handmade woodblock print. Producing it requires carving away everything you don't want to see on a block of wood, then manually pressing oil-based ink into Fabriano non-acid archival paper. It is a slow, unforgiving physical process that leaves a raised texture on the page—a quiet objection to a world of infinite, frictionless digital copying.
The Artist Jeremy Hiah (b. 1972) has spent decades observing institutional power structures and pointing out their absurdities through painting, sculpture, and performance.
Recognition: He was awarded the UOB Painting of the Year (Singapore) in 2023.
Influence: He has served as Vice President for both The Artists Village and the Sculpture Society Singapore. For the last twenty years, he has run Your MOTHER Gallery, an independent space giving emerging artists a place to show their work when the establishment isn't looking.
Collections: His works are currently held by the Singapore Art Museum, the National Gallery Singapore, and the ASIATOPIA Foundation. They seem to agree he has a point.
